When All Else Fails, READ THE MANUAL!

How often have we seen this message when opening a new gadget. And of course we try it first anyway. Just recently an 80 year old engineer friend gave a robot to our grandson to assemble with him. Our grandson started straight away while my friend studied the manual. After a while it became clear that our 6 year old grandson had made a mistake and got stuck and they needed to go back to the beginning and start again,... this time WITH the manual.

Horses do not come with a manual. Most new horse owners go pony club or an adult riding club to try to make sense how to ride and train their horse. Confusion is rife as everybody seems to use horse jargon and you feel too intimidated to ask. You will notice they talk about the nearside and offside or hear comments like "put him on the bit", "make a Half Halt" or "more impulsion".

These concepts are all included in this book. THE training book (The Art of Training) has included all these basic concepts from how to make the horse go forwards with very light, but well timed, leg aids (another jargon word 'aids'-don't worry it is the book) to more advanced concepts such as using your seat effectively, engagement, collection and how to create responsive hands and be effective with the reins.

This book concentrates on riding and training techniques. But it is just as important to keep the horse healthy and safe. A course in basic horse management is available from horseridingcoach.com

This book helped me to understand the horse jargon and get the most out of my lessons. Cheaper than a lesson and can be used again and again.
